‘Off-the-Shelf’ Events and Workshops Inspired by Roald Dahl
The following Roald Dahl-inspired events and workshops have been commissioned by Literature Wales as part of Chapter 2 of Invent your Event. They are now available to be booked by schools, libraries, festivals, venues and cultural organisations in Wales. They can be booked directly with the authors/practitioners using the contact details below.
Match funding of up to 50% of the cost of the event is available through Chapter 2 [link to main Chapter 2 page] of Invent your Event.
1. Confessions, Revelry, and Revelations – Mab Jones
Live Literature for adult audiences (aged 18+)
Taking ‘mischief makers’ as its inspiration, this is a night based around the concept of ‘confession’, and includes a lovely lot of literary entertainment from local writers and artists. Place a secret in the confession box; hear stories, poems, song, and other exciting elements; add a dash of audience interaction; and, voila! A night of superb, sensational live literature tailored just for you. Featuring top writers and award-winning poet Mab Jones as your hospitable host.
Expenses: Booker must provide a suitable PA. Available within Cardiff, Caerphilly, Torfaen, Rhondda, Blaenau Gwent, Neath Port Talbot, the Vale of Glamorgan, Newport, and Swansea. Extra fees for travel outside of these areas to be negotiated.

2. Letterpress and Words Workshop with Francesca Kay
For older adults
Poet and letterpress printer Francesca Kay will demonstrate how to set type, and print using her table-top printing press. Participants will create small artworks using words and short phrases. In the spirit of Roald Dahl’s own curiosity and passion to communicate we’ll attempt to answer the questions ‘What inspires you? What do you love? What do you want to share?’
Fee: £175 per session – one and a half hour minimum to half day
Expenses: Based in Hay on Wye. Travel included in £175 fee for South Powys, Cardiff and the Valleys. A further £30 will be charged for travel to West and North Wales.
3. From Trolls To Twits with Francis Maxey
A storytelling show for 2 classes and creative writing workshop for 1 class – primary school
The session will begin with an hour long show brimming with characters that could have sprung from Roald Dahl’s own imagination. Trolls, witches and heroic children come alive through these traditional tales and riddles designed to ignite the imagination of your students. This will be followed by an active and fun oral based workshop where the children will create their own Roald Dahl-style stories drawn from the wealth of new characters and images they have met in the show.
Fee: £200 for a half day show and workshop (9.30 am – 12.00 pm or 1.00 pm – 3.00 pm); £300 for a full day – as above with two shows in the afternoon for the rest of the school.
Expenses: From Cardiff. The first 50 miles are included in the fee; additional miles will be charged at .30p per mile.
4. Creative Writing Workshop with Angharad Tomos
For primary school children
This fun-filled workshop will shine a light on some of Roald Dahl’s narrative devices by concentrating on The Twits – the book that inspired Angharad’s own novel Sothach a Sglyfath. We will then explore the relationship between author and artist, using Roald Dahl’s own long-standing partnership with Quentin Blake as inspiration. The children will then turn their hand to drawing their own horrible characters and using colourful language to describe them!
Fee: £200 for a half day workshop (9.30 am – 12.00 pm or 1.00 pm – 3.00 pm)
Travel: Based in Penygroes, gwynedd. The first 30 miles are included in the fee, additional miles will be charged at 20p per mile.

5. Dan and Dahl Catch Dreams with Dan Anthony
Writing, reading and creativity for School Years 4, 5 and 6
We all love reading and writing stories, but where do they come from? Using Roald Dahl’s The BFG and other favourites, and his own Steve’s Dreams stories, Dan shows how Roald Dahl can help us all write, and read, better. Being influenced isn’t the same as copying.
“There’s magic in Dahl’s stories,” says Dan, “these workshops are about unlocking it.”
Fee: £350 for three interactive workshops across the school day

6. Create Your Own Giant – Bethan Gwanas
Creative writing workshops for School Years 5 and 6 or ages
Take inspiration from Roald Dahl’s The BFG to create your own Welsh giants. The workshop will involve creating names and personalities for your giants, and answering questions such as: where do they live? How do they look? What do they wear? The children will write their own stories and poems and create new Welsh gobblefunk-ish sayings to bring to life their Welsh giants.
Fee: £250 for a half day workshop (9.30 am – 12.00 pm or 1.00 pm – 3.00 pm).
Expenses: Based near Dolgellau, Gwynedd. Expenses charged at .20p per mile.

7. Art and Literature workshop with Catrin Williams
For school years 3 – 6
This workshop encourages children to respond visually and creatively to Roald Dahl’s stories and characters. You will choose and read a story and find the magic within. Children will then create their own original illustrations using pencils, biros or felt pens. The illustrations will be developed and turned into colourful backdrops or puppets which they can use to create their own Roald Dahl-inspired stories.
Fee: £150 for a half day workshop (9.30 am – 12.00 pm or 1.00 pm – 3.00 pm). £250 for a full day workshop. All art equipment and supplies are included in the fee.
Expenses: Live in Pwllheli, Gwynedd. First 30 miles are included in the fee, and .20p per mile added thereafter.
8. Horror Creative Writing Workshop with Rebecca Parfitt
For adults (18+)
‘Maker of Mischief, Master of Horror, Inventor of Monster’
Join the editor of The Ghastling for a unique writing workshop exploring horror and the macabre in Roald Dahl’s short stories for adults and write a tale of your own using Dahl’s special ingredients. Workshops will comprise of exploration of specially selected stories focussing on: Roald Dahl’s characterisation, the surreal and the macabre, horror and the domestic ‘idyll’, and Dahl’s ‘twists’. There is also a chance for publication in The Ghastling for participants.
Fee: £160 for half day workshop (10.00 am – 1.00 pm or 1.00 – 4.00 pm); £260 for full day workshop (10.00 – 4.00 pm). Materials included. It may be possible to adapt times to suit requirements – please contact to discuss.
Travel: Based in Cardiff, first 30 miles included in fee, public transport will be used wherever possible. If a car is needed, 30p per mile is charged. (For long distances accommodation may be required, fee chargeable.)
9. Masters and Champions – Rufus Mufasa
For children and young adults
Become a Champion of Good and a Master of Invention through mindfulness, positive rap and creative writing for wellbeing and community development. Use Roald Dahl’s work as inspiration to create your own exciting pieces that promote positivity and empowerment. These sessions build confidence through performance poetry, character exploration, scriptwriting and music making.
Fee: £350 for a full day, inclusive of reasonable travel, resources, follow-on studio work, completed portfolio.

10. Masters of Invention Poetry Workshop with Sophie McKeand
For children and young people aged 8-13 years

Creating nonsense words and language was something Roald Dahl delighted in with his phlantasmagozgical use of language and ribble ticklistic plays-on-words. Working together our group will be Masters of Invention. You’ll climb inside words, chew and garble and tear them up in order to create a new poem together with Sophie.

11. Delicious Roald Dahl with Sarah KilBride
Drama and creative writing workshops suitable for KS2 & KS3 (7 – 14 years old )
Join successful children’s author Sarah KilBride and explore the amazing world of Roald Dahl, full of fun facts and figures about Dahl’s life, his books and incredible characters.
Using a range of drama and writing techniques in collaborative groups, develop your very own scrummy sweets and repulsive characters for a missing chapter of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Workshops motivate participation, encourage collaboration and inspire creativity and are tailored to suit all.
Fee: £150 for 60 minute event presentations
